When Paula and Don arrived at our office in Don’s custom VW Beetle for their initial free consultation, we could tell right away they were a special couple. Don’s a jokester, and he wasted no time making us laugh in telling the story of his work with the Edward Lowe Foundation, the roots of the Lowe fortune in kitty litter, and how he planned to throw kitty litter instead of rice following the ceremony! Paula may have had a thing or two to say about that, but either way, the couple was planning for a fun ceremony and reception after having met on a blind date just 8 months before.
Paula knew right away that the Spohn Ballroom in charming downtown Goshen, IN was the right choice for her early November wedding reception. Main Street in Goshen is always picture perfect no matter the season, but fall is beautiful with all the shops, cafes, and activities in full swing, and Spohn has an incredible corner view from the 3rd floor ballroom which overlooks the historic Elkhart County Courthouse square and the view extends all the way down the small town mainstreet.
Since Don was last married in the early 1970’s, he wasn’t familiar with “modern” wedding trends in terms of timeline and entertainment, so he knew he needed a rock-solid DJ to guide him and Paula through the process both in the planning process and day-of execution, while of course providing exceptional entertainment. Our friends at the Spohn Ballroom had recommended us, and we were confident we could help create the day of Paula and Don’s dreams!
As we got to know Paula and Don, it became clear that DJ Iceberg checked all the boxes on what they were looking for from a performance standpoint, especially when Don mentioned they wanted a polka or two. Our Dazzle uplighting package was the cherry on the top for décor, considering that our wireless LED uplighting looks better in the Spohn Ballroom than just about any venue in the area.
Paula and Don chose to have an intimate ceremony spot set up in the ballroom. In another unique aspect, Don decided to have his boss at the Foundation, Dan, officiate the ceremony, with both Paula and Don’s adult children serving as attendants. Dan also acted as emcee through the early part of the reception.
Once the ceremony was finished and guests were enjoying a cocktail hour, the Spohn Ballroom staff quickly rearranged the area to become the head table area. This is the beauty of choosing a venue like the Spohn, you can use the same space for your ceremony and reception if you're not looking to have a formal church wedding. Nelson’s Catering provided a delicious meal, and then it was time to turn DJ Iceberg loose on the fun-loving crowd 175 to dance the night away. And yes, there were some polkas!
